WASHINGTON (AP) — Andrea Thomas had never heard of fentanyl when her daughter died after taking half of a pill she thought was prescription medication. Five years later, she’s among hundreds of thousands of families who have lost a loved one as the U.S. undergoes the deadliest overdose crisis in its history. DENVER (KDVR) -- A man pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder in a 2022 road rage shooting on Interstate 70 that took the life of 31-year-old Kevin Piaskowski.Jameel James, 18, was 17 at the time of the incident. He faces up to 25 years in prison, according to a statement.According to an affidavit, the incident happened around 10:58 p.m. on July 31, 2022.A witness said a pickup truck, which police said was stolen and driven by James, was tailgating another vehicle, driven by the victim. A 10-year-old boy has died following a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in what police are calling an accidental shooting.The shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Monday evening at 14050 Northwest Fifth Place in North Miami. Audio recordings from a Miami-Dade 911 dispatcher relayed the message to the police, “Complainant advising that the gun fell from the closet, went off. The 10-year-old was shot accidentally. Patient is not breathing.”Family members have identified the victim as Melvin Cockroft.Despite being rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center, the child did not survive.
